Jovan O’Connor is a Philadelphia native whose fashion influences come from daily observance of the vibrant scenes of Philadelphia’s diverse culture. Jovan attended Philadelphia University where she obtained a B.S. in Fashion Design in 2006. Jovan studied fashion design in Italy at the American University of Rome. She traveled throughout Italy and Europe and was inspired by the architecture and sculptures of ancient structures. While she was still a senior, Jovan was commissioned to design a gown for Philly’s own Patti LaBelle which established her as an independent custom designer.
After graduation, Jovan continued to build her clientele throughout the Philadelphia area, freelancing as a stylist and designing custom gowns and ensembles for special occasions. In 2011, Jovan opened a design studio which would ultimately serve as a house for her namesake line. In 2013, Jovan set out to launch her clothing line, Jovan O’Connor Inc. Jovan O’Connor was accepted as a Designer in Residence at the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator in 2014. During her residency, Jovan was selected by the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator to design a gown for Cynthia Bailey, of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, to model at the American Red Heart Association’s Red Collection Celebrity Fashion Show during NYFW. Two looks from the Jovan O’Connor Fall’14 collection were worn by 6abc anchor, Alicia Vitarelli to the Academy Awards in February 2015. Since the completion of her residency, The Jovan O’Connor brand transitioned from producing ready-to-wear collections, to couture bridal gowns and accessories.
Jovan O’Connor’s designs were published in Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam, as well as Italian Vogue, Vogue Weddings and Philadelphia Wedding Magazine. Jovan O’Connor has shown her collections in New York Fashion Week and Philly Fashion Week, and has sold them throughout the world.
